Conditions were challenging throughout the Rhône Valley in 2024, but the northern pole of the northern Rhône struggled the most.

Quality is heterogeneous in Côte-Rôtie. Rather than single-vineyard wines, it was the blends that often showed best.
In fact, Stéphane Ogier won’t be making his single-vineyard Côte-Rôties this year; ‘It’s a fresher vintage,’ he says, ‘and they have their place.’
Yields were very varied even within individual parcels, and several estates said they had to chaptalise.
This being said, there are some lovely individual wines, in a delicate, compact style. These should largely be best drunk young. But overall, this isn’t a brilliant vintage for Côte-Rôtie.
Though white wines are often excellent in 2024, across both the northern and southern Rhône, the picture in Condrieu is mixed. Although many are largely fresh and balanced, some lack enough concentration and length.
The best wines are head and shoulders above the rest however, showing intensity, vitality and no excess alcohol. It will pay to do your research in this vintage.

Domaine Merlin, Jeanraude, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

Gorgeous nose of perfumed jasmine and violet. Full and generous with wonderful freshness and silkiness on the tongue. Has real intensity, salinity, line and length. This is exceptional, among the very best of the vintage. Absolutely classic Condrieu, in a tricky vintage; bravo. From an east-facing vineyard that buts up against Château-Grillet. Spends a year in 220-litre barrels, from one- to three-year-old oak. 1,000 bottles produced.

Pierre-Jean Villa, Jardin Suspendu, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

Strong Condrieu aromas of orange peel, peach, cinnamon and nutmeg, with flowers in the background. Intense salinity and mashed citrus. Unusually long for a 2024, the freshness combining with intensity, richness and softness. Extremely good. Fermented and matured in large, old oak barrels for 12 months.

Domaine Merlin, Chanson, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

This is all about citrus peels and freshness. A direct and focused style with a strong saline, mineral undertow, this is a Condrieu that should age with interest, but it is very approachable now. Possesses energy and dynamism. Malolactic completed, aged in barrels for 10 months.

E Guigal, La Doriane, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

Rich and mineral, loads of puppy fat but good freshness. The sweetness from the oak melds well to the dry fruits. A very good, fresh and vibrant vintage of La Doriane, the generous oak spice is inlaid throughout. Long and precise. From lieux-dits Côte Chatillon, Chéry, Vernon, Colombier and Volan. All aged in new oak barriques.

Aurélien Chatagnier, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

This is a huge wine, so luxurious, unctuous and rich in texture – unusually grand and flamboyant for a 2024. Big flavour and big texture with a long finish, the alcohol is a little raised, but that's the price you pay if you want something this rich and glorious; the oak, however, is in balance. One for lovers of big, rich Condrieu, and a citrus peel bitter nip brings shape to the finish. Granite soils, fermented with natural yeasts.

Domaine Merlin, Les Terroirs, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

Concentrated, rich and opulent, more fruit than many in 2024. Powerful, with good length and purity, this is focused, saline and intense, showing citrus peels on the finish. Fruit comes from two parcels: Poncins and Roncharde. Spends 12 months in 220-litre barrels, recently used but not new.

Domaine Niero, Héritage, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

Cinnamon-spiced peach; vibrant and aromatic. Full-bodied and unctuous, with a cooling, satin texture. Creamy apricot on the palate, it's riper than some in 2024, and quite potent with a long finish. Classic proportions, not overly large, it's a selection of the best barrels and tanks from the estate, aged half in barrel, half in stainless steel.

Domaine Niero, Ravines, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

Enjoyably ripe, round and rich, with a big, spherical impression and classic Condrieu flamboyance. It has enough acidity and freshness to balance, leading to a spiced finish. Not hugely concentrated, but this is a very good option among the 2024s. Twenty-year-old vines on average, across four excellent lieux-dits, 40% aged in barrel, the rest in stainless steel. Malolactic completed.

Domaine Garon, Carmen, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

Satsuma and peach, this is vibrant and zesty, the tight, saline palate makes for a drinkable and well balanced style. Has Condrieu puppy fat but enough drive and length to balance. From the granite soils of lieux-dits Le Tinal and La Côte, aged in barriques, 30% new.

Mouton Père et Fils, Corbery, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

Pêche de vigne aromas, displaying a darker, more vinous style than white peach. Generous on the palate with good concentration and balanced acidity, this is a very fine Condrieu, possessing sappy stone fruit, textural richness, length and balance. Remarkable, considering this comes from very young vines. Fermented and aged in concrete eggs.

Mouton Père et FilsCondrieu
Mouton Père et Fils, Côte Bonnette, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

Full-bodied, rich and generous with a good sense of freshness and focus. The oak works well, it's integrated, present, adds shape and complexity. Classic and very drinkable with a mineral note on the fresh finish; a good option this year. From southwest-facing granite slopes, matured half in barriques, half in stainless steel.

Stéphane Ogier, Les Vieilles Vignes de Jacques Vernay, Condrieu, Rhône, France, 2024

Full-bodied, has weight, length, depth and beautiful freshness. Tense with an icy freshness and steeliness; structural, not fleshy. One for long ageing, this needs time. Could score higher when ready, but it is very closed and too tight to be able to judge with accuracy now. Aged in demi-muids and small foudres.

Domaine JP Jamet, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2024

A delicate and charming vintage with fine tannins. Fresh and floral, it's not unripe but neither is it concentrated. It appears quite light from barrel, but if this takes on a little flesh, as I suspect it will, it will make for a beautiful Côte-Rôtie, just not a rich one. All parcels are individually very expressive, promising a detailed and precise style this year. Drinkable young but I would wait until 2032.

E Guigal, La Landonne, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2024

Smoky, dense and dark but lovely wealth of fruit. The most tannic and textural of Guigal's four 'La Las' this year. Clove spice, focused, direct, powerful and fresh, the tannins are particularly robust, will take time to integrate and are likely to always be quite chiselled. Great intensity and concentration but still has sharp cheekbones. To revisit again at the end of the élevage as it's reductive currently, but this is very promising. Whole-bunch fermented, from lieu-dit La Landonne. Tasted at the beginning of its 42 months in new French oak barriques.

E Guigal, La Reynarde, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2024

Lovely concentration, length and density, showing more texture than La Turque this year. Full-bodied, fresh, expressive and balanced. Not as dark and bassy as the cave-like La Turque, and not as playful or aromatic as La Mouline, this is more naturalistic. 100% whole bunch but no automatic extraction like La Landonne. Will see 42 months in new oak barriques. The 1.5ha site in lieu-dit Fongeant was planted over the course of four years, the first plantation being in 2019.

E Guigal, La Mouline, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2024

Lovely nose: bright, expressive and detailed with star anise, flowers, tobacco and perfumed smoke. Fine, attractive and very Blonde in style. Light in body, good acidity, not long but very perfumed and aromatic with defined, precise and acidulated berry flavours. Elegant, you could drink this now despite the tannins being really quite present and a little crunchy but they're likely to round out with further élevage. Great purity, a classic, traditional vintage. Hard not to be won over, the fruit wins out over the oak. From lieu-dit Côte Blonde. Tasted at the beginning of its 42 months in new French oak barriques.

E Guigal, La Turque, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2024

Blackberry, blackcurrant, mulberry and incense. Broad base, creamy, almost chocolatey on the palate, the acidity is only moderate, not as high as it can be in 2024, but it's well balanced. Tannins are broad, slightly croquant, and this has that schistous density on the palate. Classically proportioned Côte-Rôtie. Very young, so give this time. Situated on the Côte-Brune, planted by Marcel Guigal in 1980 – first vintage 1985 – after having been abandoned since 1935. La Turque is a central part of Côte Brune, its size is less than 1ha. Tasted at the beginning of its 42 months in new French oak barriques.

François & Fils, Rozier, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2024

Fresh, lifted and aromatic, this has good concentration but remains light, brisk and energetic. Lovely acidity and balance with a mineral touch on the finish. A Côte-Rôtie of classicism and elegance. From lieu-dit Rozier on schist soils, 15-year-old vines, partly destemmed, aged in barriques and demi-muids with 15% new oak.

M Chapoutier, La Mordorée, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2024

Star anise, sandalwood and cedar – lovely perfume and exceptionally fine tannins. Still needs time to swallow its oak, but it's looking very promising and possesses a lovely sense of finesse. No huge concentration, but there's enough and the balance is very good; this is great winemaking. Focused and engaging with tight tannins currently, and has enough freshness to last. A combination of lieux-dits La Côte Blonde and La Côte Brune. Fermented separately then blended.

Château le Devay, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2024

Lovely nose of fresh green herbs, smoke and ash. Good sense of purity, the oak work is very much in the background and there's plenty of concentration and very fine tannins. Lovely balance and has the stuffing and substance to last. A vibrant, fine Côte-Rôtie with a long finish, from purchased fruit grown on schist, all destemmed, aged in one- to three-year-old demi-muids.

Domaine Pichat, Les Grandes Places, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2024

Herbal nose of bay leaf and olive. Fresh and brisk with surprisingly little obvious oak on the aromatics – the whole-bunch element is to the fore. Grippy, fibrous tannins on the finish from both whole bunch and oak, so give this time to settle if you're not a fan of chunky tannins, as will take time to harmonise, but it will be very good when it does. From the schistous lieu-dit Les Grandes Places, whole-bunch fermented, aged for 24 months in 400-litre new oak barrels.

Domaine Rostaing, Côte Brune, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2024

Attractive nose of menthol and juniper, then a sense of softness and silkiness on the palate; it's very charming – Côte Brune did well this year in general. Soft, aerial, not concentrated or fleshy, but it speaks of the place and its floral nature. Fresh, delicate and precise, spends four weeks in tank, 18 months in oak, fermented with natural yeasts and as many stems as possible.

Gorgeous nose, very promising, showing notes of bay leaf, juniper and pink peppercorns. A fresh feeling on the harmonious, balanced, energetic and pure palate, with a lovely, silky texture. From lieux-dits Bourrier, Rozier, Fongeant and Janet, the 10- to 60-year-old vines grown on schist and loess soils, partly destemmed, aged in barriques and demi-muids with 10% new oak.

Pierre-Jean Villa, Carmina, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2024

Raspberry and rosewater; light-bodied, fresh, vibrant and defined by high-toned spice and red fruit. Very Blonde – almost Burgundian – in style, good acidity, I would drink young for its vibrant aromatics. Destemmed fruit, aged in demi-muids for 24 months.
