In general, the Côte de Beaune experienced more damage from frost than the Côte de Nuits, although favoured regions that avoided both frost and sunburn produced excellent results.
One example of this is the cool, west-facing vineyards of Pernand-Vergelesses.
According to Frédéric Weber, cellarmaster at Beaune-based Bouchard Père et Fils, the overall crop was half the size of an average year, due to the frost, the disruption to flowering and the heat spikes.
Potential alcohol at harvest ranged from 13.5% to 14.5%, with plenty of fresh acidity, due to the concentration of tartaric acid, further accentuated by a wind that blew from the north in September.
At Jadot, head winemaker Frédéric Barnier took the step of blocking the malolactic conversion to maintain a lively freshness in the wines.
In the Côte de Beaune, one can find superb wines in both white and red.
Generally, the reds from Pommard were more homogeneous than those of Volnay, while in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, cooler sites at higher elevations tended to produce the best results.
