The selection is littered with some of the grandest houses in Champagne, although the appearance of smaller, independent growers such as Jacques Lassaigne demonstrate that it’s not all about history and prestige.
Louis Roederer’s Late Release Vintage series is well represented throughout, with the 1996 edition claiming one of the top spots alongside its sister wine, Cristal, a pair of Krug Champagnes (one of which featured in our Best Christmas Champagnes: vintage and non-vintage bottles to buy), a Taittinger Comtes de Champagne and Charles Heidsieck’s recently released, 1982 La Collection Crayères Champagne Charlie.

Recommendations for mature Champagne include a Lanson Noble Cuvée from 1979, Pol Roger’s legendary Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill from 1982 (which you can also find in Charles Curtis MW: my top 10 wines of 2022), and a relatively youthful, 1994 Philipponnat Clos de Goisses.
Two rosé Champagnes appear on the list below: Krug’s 25th edition and the Elisabeth Salmon cuvée from Billecart-Salmon, which was described by Yohan Castaing as being ‘wonderful and elegant, with a vinous texture and a superb, calcareous finish,’ when he tasted it at our Vintage rosé Champagne panel tasting.
