Hermitage was of the more successful northern appellations this year, but perhaps still not what you might expect. It's good news for the whites, though.

‘In 2022 and 2023, Côte-Rôtie had the advantage,’ says Maxime Chapoutier. ‘But in 2024 – Hermitage is back!’

There are some very good red Hermitage wines this year in an elegant, fresh and appealing style, following a cool, wet end to the growing season.
That being said, some don’t quite have the power you might expect from this renowned appellation.
Jean-Louis Chave, of his eponymous domaine which is based in the village of Mauves just south and across the river from Tain-l’Hermitage, believes that 2023 is a better vintage in general, ‘but the best 2024s are as good as the best 2023s,’ he says.
While only good for red Hermitage, this is an excellent vintage for its whites.
They’re unusually consistent; in fact, it’s hard to go wrong with white Hermitage this year, so you can buy confidently from many producers in this appellation.
What impresses is the sheer verve and dynamism of the wines, teamed with the natural breadth and richness of this terroir. They will drink well young and age well too.

Château de St Cosme, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Fresh, floral style that's not occluded by excess oak. Lovely richness on the palate, it really caresses the mouth with a lightly oily texture. Very long, this is charming, juicy, fresh, drinkable and authentically Hermitage. From lieu-dit La Pierrelle, which is a good terroir for whites. Spends nine months in barriques.

Domaine Marc Sorrel, Les Rocoules, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Dab of dry honey and honeysuckle on the nose. Full-bodied, rich but not excessively so, balanced alcohol, good acidity and enough extract to see it through. Picked one day before the rest of the estate's whites, but it was already 1% alcohol higher, as always in this plot. Drink young or age. Calcareous terroir.

Emmanuel Darnaud, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Silky, weighty, opulent, generous and plump. Concentrated, then the salty dry extract rides in to help neaten up the palate. One to drink young, for all its luxurious texture and succulent fruits. From lieux-dits Les Greffieux and Les Bessards.

Domaine Laurent Fayolle, Les Diognières, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Creamy apricot and cashew notes. Generous, lush and with weight but also lift and freshness. Good sense of tension, then finishes gently saline with firm acidity; a persistent, mineral finish. From a 0.18ha plot of 70-year-old Marsanne at the foot of the Hermitage slope. Malolactic is completed.

Domaine Garon, Fossyl, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Rich, full and opulent, showing candied peels, almonds, yellow flowers and sweet vanilla from the oak. Good sense of power and salty extract and a very long finish; this won't disappoint. From the loess soils of lieu-dit Maison Blanche, matured for 14 months in French oak barriques, 20% new, partial malolactic.

Ferraton Père & Fils, Le Reverdy, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Lovely nose, bright and detailed, combining rich apricot with peach, mango, flowers and honey. The acidity is on the low side but the wine feels balanced, and there's impressive intensity and concentration. Long finish, I would drink young. From lieux-dits Les Beaumes on limestone and alluvial soils and Le Méal, which is comprised of terraces of rounded pebbles. South, southeast exposure. 30% new oak.

Cave de Tain, Au Coeur des Siècles, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Oaky nose, with clove, cinnamon, vanilla and tobacco. Full and silky, concentrated but fresh, it's not massive but it is vibrant, enjoyably energetic and drinkable. Give it time to swallow the oak. From a parcel of 80-year-old vines, matured in 400-litre barrels, one third new.

Domaine du Colombier, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Bright, citrussy style. Generous body on the palate and good acidity, the oak is very much in the background. Has freshness, intensity and enough extract. Not a huge, mighty Hermitage, but it has real intensity and brightness. From lieux-dits Maison Blanche and Diognières. Aged for 18 months in new and one-year-old barriques.

Domaine Laurent Habrard, Les Rocoules, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Marzipan and pear on the nose, then it's full-bodied and rich on the palate, which is lush but energetic. Enough acidity to underpin the fruit, the alcohol is present; a rich example of this cuvée, which can be a relatively lean white Hermitage.

Domaine Marc Sorrel, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Introverted on the nose; has breadth and body but only light concentration. Lovely acidity and a subtle mineral freshness on the finish. One to drink young, with great pleasure. 15% amphora ageing. No filtration, no fining.

Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Le Chevalier de Sterimberg, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Rich and slightly creamy, satin textured, enjoyably ripe but not heavy. Fresh apricot, good acidity and a dry finish. Fermented and aged in concrete eggs and a few demi-muids, the oak is nicely judged.

Emmanuel Darnaud, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Unusually concentrated for a 2024, this has thick and velvety fruits, is slightly warming, with soft, pliable, toothsome tannins and a long finish. Riper than most this year, possessing solid Hermitage stylings and good freshness, giving this one of the greatest potential longevities of the vintage. Plush and delicious enough to drink young but try to resist. From lieux-dits Les Greffieux and Les Bessards.

M Chapoutier, Le Méal, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

The nose shows great class: freshness, intensity and classic Hermitage smoke. Full-bodied, this has enough concentration for sure, plus great drive. It's Hermitage but in a slim Dior suit, displaying great focus and direction. The tannins are a bit plumper here than elsewhere, it's not quite as bony. Fresh and angular but still impressive. 80% aged in demi-muids, 20% in barriques. Vines are around 50 years old, farmed biodynamically.

Domaine Yann Chave, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Gorgeous, ripe and fruity nose, this is good to go already. Really vibrant with great definition and energy, offering unctuous blackberry, plum, damson and sloe fruit. Soft and velvety on the palate, the structure is quite yielding for Hermitage, but there's some ripe, juicy tannins to hold up the fruit. Vibrant, approachable and well balanced, you could drink this young, but it will be better from 2032. Elevage in demi-muids.

E Guigal, Ex Voto, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Darkly fruited, showing blackcurrant, blackberry and a big, dense tannic weave; this is intense, powerful and has concentration without excess weight – it's still quite athletic. The tannins are massive, a bit blocky, and will take time to settle, but it will likely always be quite foursquare. Fresh, the oak work doesn't currently dominate the fruit; very promising in terms of intensity and freshness.

Ferraton Père & Fils, Le Méal, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Fresh, slightly herbal and peppery in style, oak use is measured and there's a lovely sense of freshness, precision and clarity. Sleek, very well balanced, it's all about the quality of the fruit rather than the oak. A subtle wine that could be easily missed in a long line-up; enjoyable young, but this will prove more rewarding in time. Long finish. Destemmed fruit from a south-facing plot, around 40% new oak.

Juicy, fruity, lively and zesty berry fruits. Well balanced with good Hermitage structure and proportions. Good length, elegant texture and tannins. Lovely sense of freshness, no heaviness but has Hermitage style. You could drink this young, but it will be best from 2033. Destemmed fruit, south-facing vineyard, around 25% new oak.

Domaine des Remizières, Cuvée Emilie, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Broad, mouthfilling, an unusually powerful and concentrated Hermitage for 2024. Has backbone and structure, it's a mineral style that will age well. The oak is forthright and will take time to meld, but this should be good in time.

Domaine Laurent Fayolle, Les Diognières, Hermitage, Rhône, France, 2024

Lovely purity of fruit: defined berries and spice. Good acidity and energy. Oak is well judged and the finish is long. Overall, this is a slim, elegant Hermitage of traditional, rather than massive, proportions. Silky, with quiet grandeur. From a small plot in lieu-dit Les Diognières, 60-year-old massale selection, destemmed, vinified in open-top wooden fermenters, aged in barriques.

Brambly, black berry fruits with subtle smoky notes. Cooling palate, smooth and juicy. A focused and direct style, quite foursquare, with plentiful cardamom spice on the finish. Good balance and freshness; not a massive Hermitage but a fine, compact, balanced one.
