Delas, Sainte Epine, Saint Joseph, Rhône, 2010

Sainte Epine

  • Grape Variety: Syrah
  • Drink: 2013 - 2020

Stephen Brook

Tasting: Saint Joseph 2010

Ripe but spicy nose, damsons and mint. Medium-bodied, rather light and feeble, with fresh acidity but insufficient fruit. It’s quite raw and lacks finesse. It’s certainly lively but that’s not enough, and it needs more weight and persistence. Medium length, rather dry finish.

Tasting: Saint Joseph 2010

Upstanding wine; correct in all elements; deep colour, refined if rather reticent nose, then palate which is finely balanced, beautifully harmonious and with no shortage of pedigree. Red and black fruits dance a pleasing pas de deux, the tannins are fine and the acidity poised and balletic. Rounded and long, so will please both the Roundhead and the Cavalier at the same time, which is no mean feat.

John Livingstone-Learmonth

Tasting: Saint Joseph 2010

Good sheen to the dark red colour; smoky bacon, blackberry aroma leads off, with life and an extra red-meat style depth. It is broad and secure, sets up the palate well. The palate rolls along with freedom, blends its fruit and tannins well, is fresh and open towards its compact finish. Balance pretty good, and a true local stamp to this, too. Genuine St. Joseph, on the button. Hint of liquorice on the aftertaste, all in order.
