Failla, Hirsch Vineyard, Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, California, USA 2012

Ehren Jordan and Anne-Marie Failla (FAY-la), owners of Failla winery, make a handful of exquisite Pinot Noirs from high-elevation, ocean air-cooled vineyards along what insiders call the ‘true Sonoma Coast’ – the original section of this now large appellation. Failla Pinots are poised in a delicious mythical land between Burgundy and California; sometimes closed when first released, they open up over time to become wines of purity and pinpoint elegance, with mouthwatering juiciness. Neither Jordan, whose degrees are in art history and classical architecture, nor Failla, whose background is in banking, have formal credentials in winemaking. But they appear to have something even better – a natural genius for their craft.
