Château Canon 1964

Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France

This famous St-Émilion is a 1er Grand Cru Classé (B) property, planted with 30% Cabernet Franc and 70% Merlot, is currently owned by Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, who also own Chanel. In 1964 Château Canon was owned by the Fournier family who invested in the estate to give it the reputation it has today.

Incredibly this vintage tasted far younger and richer than the 1955 that I tried in the same lineup. An ever-so-gentle assault of smoke, cold embers, spices, rhubarb jam, quince… this is beautiful, still full of freshness. The texture is more suede than the silk and lace of Canon’s more recent years, but still has the cerebral edge that this château delivers so well. We’ve moved into the library here, the withdrawing room, ready to hear the secrets of this half-century old bottle.
