At the top of a hill, looking down towards the Mediterranean is the Jaume Serra winery. Just a few kilometres from the ocean, it’s the closest to the sea of all Catalonia’s cava houses; its 125 hectares of vines spreading out around the slopes and down towards the gleaming waters.

The winery’s original stone buildings date from the 17th century, when their walls and towers were part of the external fortifications of a larger estate. They are a uniquely beautiful location for a visit for the wine-loving tourist. Not least because the tasting can be followed up by a visit to the Med’s sandy beaches five minutes’ drive in one direction, or the bustle and culture of Barcelona half an hour in the other.

But behind the 350+ year old buildings, this is an ultra-modern winery, designed to help chief winemaker Marta Fontanals and her team get the most out of the fruit from the vineyards. There is super-efficient laser-guided automation within its walls and eco-friendly solar panelling on the roof.

The uniqueness of the place is important too. Basking on gentle hillsides, Jaume Serra’s vineyards get plenty of sun, but their closeness to the sea means they are also washed by cooler air currents. It lends a purity and freshness to the fruit that is crucial to making great cava such as the new Bouquet range.

Made from native Catalan grape varieties that are perfectly suited to the region (the rosé has an added splash of Pinot Noir) the fruit is pure and lifted to give a bright, elegant base wine. Second fermentation takes place in the bottle, before a minimum nine months on lees adds texture. They are wines that are stylistically accessible yet undeniably premium

The position of affordable luxury is further backed up by the striking flower-centric bottle design – presenting the bottle cork-first can make it look like offering the recipient a bouquet of flowers. Experiential and photogenic, they’re perfect for celebrations, festive occasions and milestone family events.

Fusing modernity with tradition, and theatre with great winemaking, the Bouquet range is perfect for the here and now. As the company’s VP, Luciano Garcia Carrion Corujo neatly puts it, ‘Consumers today seek more than a great wine – they seek meaning, experience and emotional connection. Bouquet transforms a bottle of Cava into a symbol of celebration and gifting.’

Bodegas Jaume Serra's Bouquet Brut is bright straw yellow with aromas of white fruit, flowers and citrus with a gossamer overlay of nuts and patisserie. Great as an aperitif or with salmon or cured meats.

The Bouquet Rosé is intense pink, with flavours of red fruit, citrus and pomegranate over a creamy base. The wine’s long finish makes this a good match with nuts, salads and grilled vegetables.

Finally, the Bouquet Semi-Seco is pale gold, with intense flavours of flowers and white fruit. Bright citrus brings length and freshness to the lushness of the finish. A fine accompaniment for lemon desserts.

The Bouquet Brut and Bouquet Semi-Seco can be purchased at Morrisons.
