Top Vosne-Romanée 2020 en primeur wines
Charles Curtis MW selects his top-scoring wines from Vosne-Romanée in 2020 and highlights the best crus worth looking to.
In Vosne-Romanée, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair was very sensitive to the risk of ‘figging,’ noting that his whites were significantly affected, as were the younger Pinot Noir vines.
‘We sorted three times at the end of the vine rows to eliminate the problem,’ he explains.

Marie-Christine Mugneret was pleased, if a bit hesitant, about her 2020s: ‘Everything is above 14% alcohol, and the Bourgogne Rouge, at 14.8%, is the highest. We extracted colour and tannin very gently. There is such a level of alcohol and concentration that we will have to wait and see what it will give us.’

Her neighbour Etienne Grivot seemed more sanguine: ‘The acidity level is perfect and alcohol levels are lower than they were in 2018. 2019 will please connoisseurs, but the 2020s are moreish [‘gourmand’] and should please everyone. They are not monstrously atypical and there is a pleasantly spicy, saline side to them.’
In addition to the grand crus, seek out Beaux Monts, Aux Brûlées, Les Petits Monts and Malconsorts in Vosne, and Damodes, Chaignots and Les St-Georges in Nuits.
