Decanter’s expert writers and contributors awarded 95-points or more to almost 3,000 wines in the 12 months to October 2024.

While they have all appeared in the pages of Decanter magazine and online on Decanter Premium and in our decanter.com database, there were too many to reproduce here for a seasonal wrap-up.

From Baden, the Bernhard Huber winery was behind two Outstanding Chardonnays (95 and 96-points) in our German whites beyond Riesling panel tasting (October 2024 issue), before scoring 98-points for its Schlossberg Chardonnay 2022 in the Grosses Gewächs 2024-release tasting on Decanter Premium (10 October 2024) – a true champion in the alternative German white category.

Weingut Keller of Rheinhessen, on the other hand, achieved a near-perfect score with its Morstein Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) 2022. This is undoubtedly a prime example from one of Germany’s finest red wine vintages.

As Caro Maurer MW put it: ‘It reminds me of a Gevrey-Chambertin – the wine is simply world-class.’

From the foothills of Mount Fuji in Japan, Grace Wine’s Misawa Vineyard Koshu was the top find of my first visit to the Yamanashi wine region. Its delicate nature and outstanding concentration are a testament to the quality potential of the nation’s signature white grape.

Back in England, Dermot Sugrue’s Zodo (zero-dosage) non-vintage sparkling, from the South Downs, is a brilliant showcase of English fizz at its peak – striking a fine balance between its signature acidic backbone and an elegant textural complexity, realised through expert vineyard and winery management.

Finally, Klearhos Kanellakis highlighted an exceptional vinsanto in his report on the best Assyrtiko wines from Greece.

Crafted by long-established family winery Argyros, using primarily Assyrtiko from 200-year-old vines rooted in volcanic soils on Santorini, this luscious yet balanced 2015 surely has many decades ahead of it.
