The Vineyard House occupies a parcel of land in Napa Valley that few visitors recognise by name, even if many would certainly recognise the Oakville estates surrounding it.
Situated in what is called Halter Valley, an overlooked hamlet tucked into the folds of the hills below the Oakville Grade, from The Vineyard House’s 13.35ha property, one standing near the historic Baldridge House has panoramic views of three Napa icons: Harlan Estate, Promontory, and nearby Futo.
The Vineyard House’s site, which is home to 9.7ha of planted vines, was once part of the historic To-Kalon Vineyard property cultivated by pioneering viticulturist Henry Walker Crabb in the nineteenth century. Jason Stumpf, director of direct-to-consumer and hospitality, says, ‘Our site is part of the last acreage H W Crabb bought before he passed away in 1899.’
Continuing a legacy
For proprietor Jeremy Nickel, advancing the legacy of The Vineyard House is both personal and professional – his father, Gil Nickel, who passed away in 2003, owned the land and house and left it to Jeremy.
‘The historical significance of Halter Valley cannot be overstated,’ asserts Nickel. ‘It reflects six generations of pioneering families who helped place Napa Valley on the world stage as one of the world’s greatest winegrowing regions.’
‘The first record of grape growing here dates back to 1852 with William ‘Uncle Billy’ Baldridge, followed by H W Crabb’s To-Kalon Vineyard Company, and later the Stelling family, before my parents acquired the property in 1979.’
‘As the current stewards, our primary goal is to protect and enhance the health of the land for future generations, while also preserving and sharing its rich history.’
Over the past two decades, The Vineyard House has undertaken a significant replanting effort, revitalising the property with a veteran team of collaborators. Winemaker Maayan Koschitsky of Atelier Melka, who joined the project in 2018, works closely with Jim Barbor, the famed Napa viticulturist whose clients include Hundred Acre, Grace Family, Revana, Harbison Estate, and Keever.

‘This property has been part of my life for decades,’ reflects Nickel. ‘My father entrusted me with the historic vineyard house in 2003, and I formally became steward of Halter Valley in 2015. It’s an honour and a responsibility to continue his legacy while shaping the future of this place.’
Bordeaux influences
Bordeaux varieties have become the focus of the vineyard program, replacing Chardonnay vines that previously occupied some of the estate’s best hillside blocks. New plantings also include a broader range of Cabernet Sauvignon clones (30, 216 and 337).
Among the estate’s most promising parcels is the Boss Block, a west-facing hillside vineyard planted to Clone 7 Cabernet. It sits just below the forest line, receiving warm afternoon sunlight before cooling evening air slows maturation and preserves natural acidity.
‘Our Block 8 parcel – what we call ‘The Boss’ – is a 0.53ha vineyard I planted in 2008 at the highest elevation of the property, adjacent to Promontory,’ explains Nickel. ‘The name is a nod to H W Crabb’s rustic interpretation of the Latin phrase ‘To-Kalon,’ and it represents both the history and ambition of the site.’
For collectors and long-time fans of the estate, library vintages from 2011 to 2018 offer a glimpse into the wines produced by former winemaker Bill Ballentine. Wines from 2019 onward, including the recently released 2023 vintage, reflect the evolving style ushered in by Koschitzky and Atelier Melka.
As the replanted vineyard parcels continue to mature, the wines are showing increased precision and site expression – inky dark fruit, forest spice, and loamy earth notes.
‘Halter Valley is a genuinely unique place,’ Nickel maintains, ‘There’s a sense of serenity here that feels almost euphoric – something visitors often describe as spiritual. My father used to call it the “Mona Lisa” of all his vineyard holdings.’
