Decanter turns wine into water

Decanter raised nearly £14,000 for the charity WaterAid yesterday as part of a special Christie’s auction.

The London auction house sold all 90 lots, raising a total of £13,750. The money raised will go to the joint Decanter/WaterAid project in Burkina Faso, West Africa.

Burkina Faso is one of the 10 poorest countries in the world. Just under half of its 12m population has access to clean water and sanitation. Forty-five per cent live below the poverty line.

All the wines auctioned were the remaining bottles from the over £10 category in this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards.

Although 2,016 bottles were sold yesterday, a second auction will be held on 26 September at 5.30pm at the Landmark Hotel, as part of the Decanter Fine Wine Encounter.

It is not necessary to hold tickets for Decanter Fine Wine Encounter to take part in the auction.
