History:

As an independent Château, Couhins-Lurton has existed only since 1972. It was then that André Lurton purchased a modest part of the large and stately Couhins estate not far from the city of Bordeaux. The sellers were INRA (National Agronomics Research Institute) who had been given possession of the entire Couhins vineyard as a means of securing its future after the previous owners had proposed to grub it up. The estate’s 19th century château was sold to a private buyer in Bordeaux. Lurton has since reunited the château and vines – he bought back the splendid edifice and its grounds in 1992 – and has added a nearby red wine vineyard to his small white wine only plot.
