Cotes du Rhone, Nature, Perrin & Fils 2007

The treatment of this wine - a proportion of the grapes undergo flash heating where they are heated to 80 degrees C for 30 seconds then cooled back down to 20 degrees C - is somewhat at odds with its Mother Earth-themed name. This method allegedly only affects the skins, aiding extraction of aroma and colour. Despite any misgivings you may have, this is still imbued with the quality of winemaking you would associate with the Perrins, boasting plenty of attractive, juicy and crisp Grenache fruit.

Aglianico, Vigna del Sasso, IGT Campania, Selvanova 2006

Rather attractive and initially quite light on its feet - although it does struggle to cope with the 14% abv. Both the nose and palate show characteristics reminiscent of freshly crushed, gently spiced fruit. The heat from the alcohol does kick in on the palate, but if that doesn't put you off, there's inviting, spicy blackberry and plum flavours beneath.

Margrain, Home Block Pinot Noir, Martinborough 2007

Good quality fruit on show here, and there's also enough character and complexity to justify the price. This is a brambly, spicy, woody, slightly leathery Martinborough Pinot. These more savoury nuances complement the forward nature of the New World fruit and they prove good bedfellows. A gutsy number that will definitely find favour with many.

Polena, IGT Sicilia, Donnafugata 2008

Equal parts of Viognier and Catarratto, it has attractive herbal characters running throughout, highlighted by fine dustings of spice and bolstered by broad stone fruit notes. The flavours are crystal clear in their purity and a gentle lick of honey on the back palate polishes it off.
£10.99 Oddbins branches (0800 917 4093)

Sherazade, IGT Sicilia, Donnafugata 2007

An inviting blend of Syrah and Nero d'Avola, boasting mulberry, plum and dough aromas. On the palate, the Syrah brings spice and the Nero d'Avola crisp crunchy red fruit. It's a combination that works surprisingly well.
£10.99 Asda Supermarkets (0113 243 5435), Booth's supermarkets (01772 251 701), Majestic Wine Warehouses (01923 298 200), Tesco supermarkets (01992 632 222), Thresher branches (01707 387 200)

Vina Leyda, Sauvignon Blanc, Garuma Vineyard, Leyda Valley 2008

This will certainly have its fans. There's a fair amount of leesy character that will dissuade many, but possibly appeal to a similar number who like their Sauvignons to show some muscle. Regardless, that Leyda Valley bite still shines through on the palate, bringing zing and lift.
£8.99 Oddbins branches (0800 917 4093)

Petit Duc, Sauvignon Blanc, VdP du Val de Loire 2008

Brimming with youthful vitality, this shows a linear, peapod-dominated nose with mineral undertones. The palate is almost eye-watering in its brightness, but once the senses have recovered, there's a nice lime juice core to it, and a firm mineral finish.
£9.99 Oddbins branches (0800 917 4093)

Cotes du Luberon Rose, Les Restanques, Chateau Fontvert 2008

Interesting wine; quite charming and doesn't try too hard nor overstretches itself. It's biodynamic and shows a nice level of pure red fruit, complemented by healthy shakes of spice. Relatively restrained, there's still a nice weight and feel to the palate, all of which equals a wine blessed with a strong easy-drinking character.
£7.99 Oddbins branches (0800 917 4093)

Barbera d'Alba, Bovio 2007

Lots of expressive blueberry and red cherry aromas create a good first impression here. In the mouth it's smooth and spicy with bright acidity as expected. This won't have you struggling to find suitable adjectives to describe its majestic splendour, but it's pretty good stuff and a pleasing glass of wine.
£11.99 Oddbins branches (0800 917 4093)

Gavi di Gavi, Tacchino, Mario Ronco 2008

Plenty of herbs on the nose here, bolstered by a crisp, citrus leanness. The wine is left for four months on the lees, and that classic mealy note really comes through on the palate, but it's well harnessed and not overly dominating, merely adding roundness and mouthfeel as it should. Within that there is a very attractive juicy core of lemony fruit that pushes this 100% Cortese wine along very nicely.
