Marqués de Riscal, Reserva, Rioja 1964
Without question, this was one of the great vintages of the 20th century in Rioja. Moreover, this is possibly the wine of that extraordinary vintage. A blend of 75% Tempranillo and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon this is Riscal’s famous ‘Cuvee Medoc’. It possesses a stunning nose of musk and shoe polish. Though clearly mature, the palate is in great shape with sweet cedar tinged red fruits, apricot, beeswax and a touch of truffle oil. The tannins and freshness are terrific providing ample structure and density. Quite extraordinary. You could keep this for a little longer, but I don’t think it will improve.
