He has published four books on the Rh\u00c3\u00b4ne, including <em>The Wines of the Northern Rh\u00c3\u00b4ne<\/em>, which won the Louis Roederer International Book Prize in 2006, and was commended in the Andr\u00c3\u00a9 Simon Awards. A principal contributor to the book <em>Gigondas, Its Wines, Its Land, Its People<\/em>, published in English and French in late 2011 by Bottin Gourmand, John is also an honorary citizen of the Rh\u00c3\u00b4ne village of Ch\u00c3\u00a2teauneuf-du-Pape and runs the website <a href="http:\/\/www.drinkrhone.com\/" target="_blank">drinkrhone.com<\/a>. In 2006, he was made a Chevalier de l\u00e2\u0080\u0099Ordre du M\u00c3\u00a9rite Agricole, and describes the Rh\u00c3\u00b4ne as running through his veins. John is a close follower of the Turf, having been the <em>Daily Telegraph<\/em> Racing Hero of the Year 2000.<img src="http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/05\/0000058ce-JohnSwitzer_justinetrickett_5384.jpg"><h2>John Switzer DWWA 2013 Judge<\/h2>John Switzer is a wine writer and educator based in Toronto Canada. He is Director of the WSET Diploma program at the Independent Wine Education Guild in Toronto and is a frequent speaker at wine events in the Toronto area. He is a WSET Certified Educator and is a member of the Society of Wine Educators.<img src="http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/05\/0000058d4-KatieExton_justinetrickett_5364.jpg"><h2>Katie Exton DWWA 2013 Judge<\/h2>Katie Exton began her wine career in 2005, helping out Peter Hall at English winery Breaky Bottom. She then spent six months working in wineries in Canada and Australia, before returning to the UK and joining Majestic Wine. A year later she took a trainee sommelier position at Chez Bruce under the stewardship of fellow Decanter judge Terry Threlfall, where she worked until 2009 when she left to do a six month stint at Mayfair's The Square restaurant. In March 2010 Katie returned to Chez Bruce to take on her current role of Head Sommelier.<img src="http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/05\/0000058da-LaurentRichetMS_justinetrickett_5192.jpg"><h2>Laurent Richet MS DWWA 2013 Judge<\/h2>Laurent Richet MS was born in the Loire Valley and attended Saumur\u00e2\u0080\u0099s catering college, where he graduated as a sommelier. He headed south shortly after, and worked for some of the finest establishments on the C\u00c3\u00b4te d\u00e2\u0080\u0099Azur including La Reserve de Beaulieu, in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, and Hotel de Paris in Monaco. Laurent then moved to the UK where he continued his profession at the Celtic Manor Resort in South Wales, and Hotel TerraVina in the New Forest. Laurent currently works for Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottingham, and in 2010 he won the Gastronomy Team of the Year competition, in addition to passing his Master Sommelier examinations and gaining the Crew Cup.<img src="http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/05\/00000593a-VirginiaPhilipMS_justinetrickett_5507.jpg"><h2>Virginia Philip MS DWWA 2013 Judge<\/h2>Virginia Philip MS\u00e2\u0080\u0099s career includes a list of accolades and experience spanning more than a decade. In her 13th year at The Breakers Palm Beach in Florida, Virginia leads the beverage department for nine restaurants and bars and 14 wine lists, including the resort\u00e2\u0080\u0099s prized 1,600-selection list, which has won <em>Wine Spectator<\/em>'s Grand Award every year since its inception in 1981. In 2011, she fulfilled a lifetime dream when she opened the Virginia Philip Wine Shop & Academy, which offers her personal selections from around the world and weekly wine education programs. The following year, Philip received a coveted James Beard Award-nomination for Outstanding Wine & Spirits Professional. She also been awarded the national title of \u00e2\u0080\u009cBest Sommelier of the United States\u00e2\u0080\u009d from the American Sommelier Association and has sat on the Board of Directors for the Court of Master Sommeliers.<img src="http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/05\/0000058d9-LaurentChaniac_justinetrickett_5367.jpg"><h2>Laurent Chaniac DWWA 2013 Judge<\/h2>Laurent Chaniac is food and wine consultant to The Cinnamon Club and Kitchen in London, exercising his expertise in matching wines to Indian cuisine. He has been described as a sommelier who \u00e2\u0080\u009chas pioneered some revolutionary ideas on pairing wine with the constantly evolving Indian flavours". He has also worked in various managerial positions with some of London's finest dining experiences, including L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon, The Square Restaurant and The Stafford Hotel.<img src="http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/05\/0000058e7-Mark_Williamson_dwwa2012_JTrickett_2590.jpg"><h2>Mark Williamson DWWA 2013 Judge<\/h2>Mark Williamson owns Willi\u00e2\u0080\u0099s Wine Bar in Paris (which celebrated its 32rd birthday in October 2012), and the next door restaurant Mac\u00c3\u00a9o. His wine preference is for Rh\u00c3\u00b4ne, but he is also involved with Burgundy and Oregon producer, Evening Land Vineyards. Recently Mark opened a holiday retreat, B.CasaMi, in the Tramuntana mountains of Mallorca, one of the Balearic islands of Spain.<img src="http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/05\/0000058fd-Nick_Clarke_MW_dwwa2012_JTrickett_2735.jpg"><h2>Nick Clarke MW DWWA 2013 Judge<\/h2>Nick Clarke MW joined Hedges & Butler in 1960 and rose successfully to the position of Wine Buyer for Bass Charrington. He passed his Master of Wine exams in 1971, and in 1978 Nick joined Henry C Collison, where he became Managing Director in 1981. In 1986 he joined O W Loeb as a director, and developed their ex-cellar sales for Paul Jaboulet Aine and Hugel, in particular. In 1996, with the support of Paul Jaboulet Aine and Hugel, Nick reformed Dreyfus Ashby (which had been bought by O W Loeb following the takeover of Schenley (USA) by Guinness). He is now a consultant for Dreyfus Ashby and has always held an interest and passion for the wines of Alsace, Rhone and South Africa.<img src="http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/05\/000005898-DavidRobertsMW_justinetrickett_5381.jpg"><h2>David Roberts MW DWWA 2013 Judge<\/h2>David Roberts MW has 20 years experience in the wine trade. Following 10 years as Buying Director for Berry Bros and Rudd, and three years as Head of Buying for Lay & Wheeler Ltd, David set up David Roberts Domaines Ltd in 2005. In March 2010 DRD merged with Goedhuis & Co, to further develop their joint private client wine businesses in the UK. David also acts as wine buying consultant for the Fishmongers\u00e2\u0080\u0099, Clothworkers\u00e2\u0080\u0099 and Merchant Taylors\u00e2\u0080\u0099 Livery Companies.<img src="http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/05\/0000058bc-Jamie_Hutchinson_dwwa2012_JTrickett_2591.jpg"><h2>Jamie Hutchinson DWWA 2013 Judge<\/h2>Jamie Hutchinson is the Managing Director and co-founder of independent wine merchant The Sampler. After a career in venture capital, Jamie opened The Sampler in Islington in 2006, followed by a South Kensington branch in 2011, and plans to open other shops in the future. Jamie\u00e2\u0080\u0099s passions are Sherry, traditional Rioja, grower Champagne and Beaujolais, while his weaknesses are for wines with personality and that go against normal commercial conventions. Jamie is also the holder of the WSET Rafael Balao Lustau Memorial Trophy and won the WSET Cava and Penedes Wine Institute Bursary.<img src="http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/05\/0000058a7-Gearoid_Devaney_MS_dwwa2012_JTrickett_2912.jpg"><h2>Gearoid Devaney MS DWWA 2013 Judge<\/h2>Gearoid Devaney MS works at Flint wines, an independent merchant based in London. He was voted UK Sommelier of the Year 2008, Restaurant magazine\u00e2\u0080\u0099s Sommelier of the Year 2007 and is now a Master Sommelier. He was Head Sommelier at London\u00e2\u0080\u0099s Capital Hotel and has additionally worked at London\u00e2\u0080\u0099s l'Oranger and the three-Michelin starred Pierre Gagnaire in Paris. In 2003 he assisted Tom Aikens in opening his signature restaurant and was part of the team instrumental in the restaurant winning a Michelin star.<img src="http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/05\/000005889-Christian_Honorez_DWWA.jpg"><h2>Christian Honorez DWWA 2013 Judge<\/h2>Christian Honorez is the founder and Managing Director of H2Vin and has more than 28 years\u00e2\u0080\u0099 experience of bringing quality wines to top restaurants and hotels in the UK through his prior positions with Genesis Wines, H&H Bancroft and H&H Fine Wines. H2Vin is a wine importer that aims to provide the UK marketplace with a range of wines sourced from predominantly small producers.
