The 2021 vintage was particularly well suited to making this type of wine; the best this year are beautiful examples. Many producers, such as Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier and Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, picked just a half crop because of the frost. The new winemaker at de Vogüé, Jean Lupatelli, noted: ‘It wasn’t an easy year, but it was a classic one that brought wines with substance. It was a very stressful growing season that required great focus in the vineyard. Once it was picking time, however, it was not too much work on the sorting table, and we saw that we had done a good job in the vines.’ [caption id="attachment_496207" align="alignnone" width="750"] Credit: Vins de Bourgogne[/caption] Other growers had fewer problems with the frost. Christophe Roumier reported that the yield was much lower for the village-level wines than for the grands crus: ‘Two-thirds of our Bonnes-Mares is on the cold terres blanches [soil] at the top of the slope and hadn’t budded out yet, so escaped the frost.’ His 2021 is among the most powerful and complex wines from this site that I tasted this vintage. As elsewhere, those who pruned late complained less about frost damage. Antoine Amiot-Servelle commented: ‘We didn’t finish pruning until the beginning of April. I thought I was behind but it worked out well and we didn’t suffer much. We are also using cover crops between the rows instead of tilling the vineyard which helped keep mildew down.
