Although Bruno Clair said that his frost damage in Gevrey was less severe than it was further north in Marsannay, the damage was still extensive. Cyrielle Rousseau of Domaine Armand Rousseau cites 2021 as the smallest harvest she has ever done, about 40% less than normal. ‘It is the [fermentation] tanks that decided, and we do what they tell us,’ she says. ‘All the smallest ones were full, and the larger ones were empty.’ The village-level Gevrey Chambertins in 2021 often display lively energy. As Loïc Dugat-Py expressed it: ‘The village wines have “peps”, but the grand crus have depth.’ He notes that they lost at least 60% of their crop in the most exposed areas on the flat plain at the mouth of the Combe de Lavaux, but they cut the losses to 40% with the help of candles to fight the frost in the premier crus and grand crus. Like her father, Rousseau prefers Clos-de-Bèze in cooler years and Chambertin in warmer vintages. Her Clos-de-Bèze in 2021 was a spectacular success. Another terroir that does particularly well in cooler years is Charmes-Chambertin. Thibault Liger-Belair of Nuits-St-Georges noted that he produced more wine in this appellation in 2021 than he did in 2020. His Charmes, along with others from Domaine Georges Roumier and Domaine Amiot-Servelle, was among the top-scoring wines from 2021. The best examples of the 2021 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin have a high-toned red berry fruit character with floral overtones. If the body is often lighter than the past three years and the acidity higher, the wines will display a vibrant energy that will remind some lovers of vintages such as 1991, the best of which have stood the test of time exceedingly well.
