Vega Sicilia, Pintia 2012
Whereas Ribera del Duero is continental in climate, with cold winters and hot summers, Toro is ever more extreme and makes bolder wines, such as Vega’s Pintia. The art is in taming it, as Technical Director Gonzalo Iturriaga comments : ‘Pintia has a huge personality and it’s complicated to make. In particular you have to be really careful to avoid overripe fruit.’ This latest release is a dense and savoury wine with dark tobacco and cedar notes. The blackcurrant and dark plum fruit is underpinned by firm, finely chewy tannins and lifted by a dart of tangerine acidity. It has a long finish, but needs more time to integrate. 100% Tinto Fino. 12 months in 70% French and 30% American oak.
