History:
The Barton family has been associated with Bordeaux’s wine business for almost 300 years – since 1722 when Thomas Barton arrived fresh from Ireland to work in the wine trade. Thomas himself bought a Château, Le Boscq in Saint-Estèphe, but it is grandson Hugh Barton who stamped the family name on this property, in 1821. He bought the land (complete with fine 18th century château) from Pierre Bernard de Pontet of Château Pontet-Canet in Pauillac. Langoa prospered for much of the 19th century, and unlike others was spared the usual string of owners two world wars and the great depression invariably entailed. The Bartons held firm, and in 1983 control of Langoa Barton and the family’s other estate, Léoville Barton, passed to eighth-generation Anthony Barton. Today, Anthony Barton managaes both estates with the help of his daughter Lilian.
