Many wine brands tie themselves to a region – but Pata Negra and its Fauna range, created by Grupo García Carrión, has no such limits. The ambition is, in the words of Luciano García-Carrión (vice president of the company), to ‘offer an authentic journey through Spain’s different wine regions’.
Combining wines from La Mancha, Rueda, Toro and Rioja, Pata Negra Fauna acts as a guide for consumers, with instantly recognisable, benchmark expressions of these key Spanish wine regions and Denominations of Origin.
‘Customers should be able to recognise the freshness and aromatic energy of Rueda, the power of Toro, the elegance and complexity of Rioja, and the generous yet balanced character of La Mancha,’ García-Carrión explains.
Typicity is important for the brand to deliver on this promise – but for them typicity isn’t about following a set formula. It is, García-Carrión says, a matter of ‘identifying the most distinctive qualities of a region and expressing them with clarity, purity of fruit and balance’.
Take the La Mancha bottling: the wine is a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Graciano – combining indigenous and international varieties to represent this dynamic region, paying tribute to its origins while acknowledging its capacity for innovation.

Grupo García Carrión: A trusted name for over a century
Established in 1890 in Jumilla, Grupo García Carrión started as a small family wine business – supplying France when phylloxera struck. Five generations on, the business is Spain’s largest wine producer and one of Europe’s leading names, exporting to over 150 countries. Today, its various brands are trusted names on our shelves – with the likes of Don Simón, Marqués de Carrión, Jaume Serra and Antaño, alongside Pata Negra.
Pata Negra was the first brand to unite different regions under one umbrella – with La Mancha, Rueda, Toro and Rioja chosen to offer a compelling cross-section of Spain’s viticultural diversity. ‘Each has a strong and clearly recognizable personality,’ García-Carrión explains – allowing them to create four wines with distinct identities, from a vibrant white to structured and expressive reds, each one an accessible entry point for consumers.

Four iconic fauna to represent each wine
As you might guess from the name of the range – Fauna – each wine is characterised by an animal, conceived to give a powerful, immediate sense of each wine’s personality.
‘The Iberian lynx represents the intelligence, precision and elegance of La Mancha; the fox captures the freshness, agility and lively character of Rueda; the bull reflects the strength and intensity of Toro; and the wolf conveys the controlled power, depth and refinement of Rioja,’ says García-Carrión.
Stamped on Pata Negra’s modern black labels (with the colour a nod to the brand’s name – literally meaning ‘black leg’ after the black pigs that make the best Iberican ham), these animals are more than just a striking aesthetic choice – but a nod to Spain’s heritage, rooting each wine in its natural landscape.
