DWWA 2011: Looking for value Cabernet? Try South America
The most affordable gold-medal winning Cabernets in this year's Decanter World Wine Awards came from Chile and Argentina. Thanks to the pair’s dry climate, abundant sunshine and plentiful irrigation water from the Andes, it can produce ripe Cabernet at comparatively low cost.
The Cimarosa Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 from Chile’s Central Valley was the best value gold medal winner in the entire competition in addition to the the Cabernet category.
But neighbouring Argentina made up the next four spots in the best quality-value for money Cabernet stakes. All four hail from the country’s largest, and most renowned region, Mendoza.
Santa Julia’s Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 took a top gong and gives change from a ten pound note. Also selling at around a tenner is Santa Ana’s La Mascota Cabernet Sauvignon 2000.
The top five value Cabernet spots are filled by Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (£11.99) and Viña Cobos Felino Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (£12.49).

I live in Italy and on the basis of the DWWA 2011 report on the Cimarosa Chile Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 I bought a bottle of it at my nearest Lidl for Euro 1.99. Certainly worth Euro 1.99 but was totally unexciting.
