Wines not mines, say Margaret River growers
- Thursday 19 August 2010
The Margaret River Wine Industry Association believes the region’s reputation as a wine producer and tourist destination could be threatened if mining is permitted, and has even made comparisons to the fall-out following the recent BP oil disaster.
'The Association firmly believes that development of coal mining in the Margaret River region will have a detrimental impact upon the wine industry and impinge greatly upon our collective wine brand,' it said in a statement.
'One only has to look to Florida and the BP oil rig disaster to see what costs and damage can be done to the environment and the brand associated with it for communities and Government’s alike.'
The application for the Vasse Coal Project is currently under review
