A major international wine event is set to go ahead asplanned in Christchurch, New Zealand, this autumn, despite the earthquake whichhit the city recently.
Wine Discovery New Zealand 2010 has been organised tocoincide with the Great Wine Capitals Global Network AGM and internationalconference, after New Zealand’s South Island was admitted to the network in2009.
The conference and events had been scheduled for variousvenues in the Christchurch and South Island areas from 31 October to 4 November– but had been put under threat by the 7.1 Richter Scale earthquake which hitthe area on 4 September, damaging a number of buildings.
Now Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker has said that theprogramme will go ahead in full and as scheduled.
‘There have been rumours Christchurch has been flattened bythe quake – this is certainly not the case,’ he said.
‘Although there has been significant damage to somebuildings, a lot of our city is still intact and we are trying to get back tobusiness as usual wherever possible.’
The registration deadline for South Island wineries wishingto show their wines at the event has now been extended to 25 September.
