Vintage overview
When tasting red wines from the Listrac region, I found that the few and far between dry whites performed better: a sign for this catch-all category, as properties in the other appellations also produce a few dry whites.
While some estates with the means to remove mildew-affected Merlots did well, others showed tell-tale signs of mildew damage: green, stemmy falvours and hard tannins. Care is needed when considering these four broader Médoc appellations, with ‘variable’ an apt description.
On a general basis, properties benefitting from cooler climates further north – such as an outstanding Château Sociando Mallet along with fine performances from Château Les Ormes Sorbet (Médoc), Château Bel Air Gloria (Haut-Médoc), Château Larrivaux (Haut-Médoc) – tended to surpass properties in the south.
But that generalisation does not count when it comes to estates that were unable to sort out mildew-affected grapes or did not wait to harvest ripe Cabernets.

Some estates further south, such as Château Poujeaux in Moulis or Château Clarke in Listrac did manage the conditions well and their efforts stand out from the rest.
Other names to look out for in these fringe appellations include most of the classified growths from the Haut-Médoc, including Château Belgrave, Château de Camensac and (especially) Château La Lagune.
