Mendoza set to be Great Wine Capital
- Thursday 12 May 2005
At present Melbourne, Bordeaux, San Francisco and Napa Valley, Porto, Florence, Rioja and Bilbao, and Cape Town are Great Wine Capitals.
GWC is a ‘global network’ of wine regions set up to encourage international winery tourism, and economic, academic and cultural exchanges.
‘My first impresion of Mendoza is good. The province has all the characteristics and qualities to be a GWC’, Jack Rastherhoof, an Australian representative said.
He added, ‘We must analyse the whole province. We recognise that the infrastructure of wineries in Mendoza meets our standards.’
As a GWC capital, Mendoza will have access to promotional activities around the world, take part in international tastings, competitions and other GWC events. Members are currently organising the ‘Best of Wine Tourism’ award.
The final decision on Mendoza will be taken in November this year.
