Clarendon Vineyard and Winery is up for sale for more than A$10m
The Australian vineyard, at the northern end of McLaren Vale, has supplied fruit for some of Australia’s most lauded wines, including Penfolds Grange and Eileen Hardy Shiraz.
Also the source of the Clarendon Hills and Hickinbotham brands, it was featured by Robert Parker in his book The World’s Greatest Wine Estates.
Clarendon was established in the 1970s by building tycoon Alan Hickinbotham and includes 186ha of land, of which 83ha are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Grenache, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier.
The property also includes a ‘boutique’ winery and two houses – a stone mansion known as The White House and designed by architect Rob Cheesman, and the underground Earth Shelter House created by German architect Gerhard Schurer.
Expressions of interest for the property are due to close on 7 December.

Penfolds once had a contract to buy grapes from Clarendon but have not taken grapes from this privately owned vineyard for about 10 years. Much of the vineyard has been poorly managed in recent times and the quality is no where near what it used to be. It is surprising that some solid wines have been produced from this vineyard given the circumstances.

The headline "Penfolds Grange vineyard up for sale" is a litte bit misleading, like Grange is a blend from different estates and there is no such "Grange vineyard". Maybe the one near Grange Cottage at Magill may be called so, but this one is certainly not on sale.

The headline is very misleading. On reading the article, it appears the following is happening. The brand "Grange" by the producer Penfolds Wines is not so sale.
The winery and vineyards of the producer Clarendon Hills (which generally had its best wines 1998-2002) are for sale. Penfolds purchased some of the fruit produced by the management of the Clarendon Hills properties.
