Aussie petition accused of protectionism
- Wednesday 24 November 2010
McLaren Vale producer Stephen Pannell has launched a website, allforonewine.com.au, urging Australians to drink Australian wine in January 2011.
The petition, which has attracted more than 500 signatories in the first five days including winemakers Vanya Cullen, Jeffrey Grosset and wine writer Max Allen, has attracted a good deal of criticism.
There has been considerable debate amongst bloggers and on Twitter, with claims it is 'protectionist' and 'jingoistic'.
Pannell said he was simply trying to celebrate Australian wines. 'Australian wine is not travelling well even in our own market. There's almost a cultural cringe about our wines but we should have pride in them. It's hypocritical to eat local and then drink Chianti,' he told Decanter.com.
'People are up in arms about this but it's only 26 days of drinking Australian wine – I'm not asking people to drink five litres of Yellow Tail or donate a kidney.'
Barossa producer Matt Gant of First Drop Wines has also backed the campaign. 'Steve's open letter is a convincing call to arms that raises some good points, not least challenging us to explore our own back yard for great wines rather than looking to the Old World, plus posing the question “if you're eating local, why aren't you drinking local?” So I was happy to enlist and join the good fight,' he told Decanter.com.
The petition has also been criticised overseas – notably in New Zealand, for which Australia is the biggest export market.
Philip Gregan, CEO of New Zealand Winegrowers, questioned the campaign's motives. 'Where would the Australian industry be if a similar campaign started in the USA? The world is bigger enough for us all, and a huge part of the joy of wine is the taste and stories of wines from different places and cultures. Such a move represents a very myopic view of the world' he said.

I don't think this is any different to 'Buy Australian' campains for other products. The government want's us to buy Australian! Why? Because the profit stays here! People here are employed! Why wouldn't you want to buy an Aussie car? Probably the same people who don't eat lamb on Australia Day. Some of the other commentors need to find out some facts before they post. Good McLaren Vale Grenache can be priced anywhere from $1000 - $4000+ PER TONNE. Try and sell that for $6! Yes, cost in some case may be as low as $6 per bottle, but at least double that by adding a PROFIT MARGIN (so you stay in business) & WET & GST in Aust. Or the cost of shipping, the agent's margin and the retailers margin for export. I support the idea.

A support Australian campaign is a great idea and various other, better thought out versions are gaining momentum and credibility. Frankly, I choose to ignore this one as it uses negative imagery and fear mongering tactics to gain attention. Poor form.

Aussie wineries should get real and stop conning consumers with endless BS. The cost of producing a bottle of wine is definitely not mroe than 6 dollars, why cant you people compete with others? Get your act together, be less greedy, and learn to adopt good marketing principles. Making dumb appeals to aussies to drink aussie wine is profoundly stupid ! Will Holden put an appeal next to buy its car paying a few grand more, with less features - cause its ozzie ! WAKE UP people !

Perhaps Mr Pannell would like to explain why I can buy the Grenache he made in Spain more easily and for less then the Grenache he made in McLaren Vale at my local Adelaide bottle shops.
Is it true the campaign is starting Jan 1 so Stephen can enjoy imported Champagne over Christmas and New Year?
