Christie’s DWWA sale breaks records to raise money for WaterAid

The sale of the 2012 Decanter World Wine Award wines for WaterAid broke all previous records at Christie's Fine and Rare Wine sale today.

The 90 lots comprised wines drawn from the over £10 category of the Decanter World Wine Awards, the world’s largest wine competition, raised over £40,000 – almost double last year’s sale.

After this year’s auction, the Decanter ‘Turning Wine into Water’ initiative has raised over £300,000 since the Decanter World Wine Awards started supporting the charity over eight years ago.

Bids came from all over the world with telephone and online bids from New York to Hong Kong, along with a packed London sales room.

David Elswood, International Director of Wine at Christie’s, had flown back especially for the sale from Beijing. All 90 lots were sold, with each lot well exceeding its estimate.

Sarah Kemp, Decanter publishing director said: ‘I am overjoyed with the result. I recently went with WaterAid to Zambia to see their work. The difference between those who have clean water and those who don’t is stark; it literally can mean a difference between life and death. I am proud that Decanter has been able to help the poorest communities on the planet by supporting WaterAid.’
