History:
In the early 18th century Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur sold some family land - from the huge Ségur estate - to a Dominique d'Armailhacq. Naming his new property Mouton d’Armailhacq, perhaps with a nod to its even then illustrious neighbour, Brane Mouton (the forerunner of Mouton Rothschild), d'Armailhacq did well on the deep gravelly terroir to the north of Pauillac - but a generation later debts forced its sale. The buyer, estranged wife of one of d'Armailhacq's successors, bequeathed the vineyard to her son Armand d'Armailhacq, though she sold a small but prime plot to nearby Château Lafite to help cover costs. In 1934, the estate came to a young Baron Philippe de Rothschild - and was renamed Mouton-Baron-Philippe (later Mouton-Baronne-Philippe in honour of Philippe's late wife). There has been much renovation and replanting - and the Château's present-day title was settled by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild after she succeeded her father in 1989.
