Members of the wine trade and keen wine enthusiasts enjoyed an array of Italian wines at the Decanter Simply Italian 2015 tasting in London. Almost 30 producers from wineries across Italy showcased their wines at Stationers’ Hall in central London.

Two masterclasses took place during the trade tasting; Wines from Friuli Venezia Giulia and Vintage Franciacorta & Federdoc.

Peter McCombie MW led the Friuli session, where attendees tasted 10 different Friuli wines – demonstrating the range the region has to offer. Representatives from each winery included contributed to the discussion. The wines included: Perusini, Pinot Grigio 2014; Zorzon, Malvasia 2014; Talis Wine, Sauvignon 2014; Valentino Butussi, Sauvignon ‘Genesis’ 2014; Gradis’ciutta, Bratinis 2013; Primosic, Klin Collio Bianco 2010; Ca’Tullio, Patriarca Refosco; Dal Peduncolo Rosso 2013; Alessio Dorigo, Rosso Dorigo (table wine – NV); Valpanera, Rosso Di Valpanera 2012; Petrussa, Schioppettino Di Prepotto 2011.

The Franciacorta session was about the traceability & regulation of Italian DOC wines, led by Riccardo Ricci Curbastro from Federdoc, where he declared that the UK market was ‘sophisticated’, with a high knowledge of wine. Attendees of this masterclass were also treated to some cured Italian meats and cheese to accompany their vintage Franciacortas, from Istituto Valorizzazione Salumi Italiani. The wines served were: Franciacorta Ricci Curbastro Extra Brut 2010; Franciacorta Ricci Curbastro Dosaggio Sero “Gualberto” 2007; Franciacorta Ricci Curbastro Saten Brut 2005 Museum Release.
