Although the vineyard origins lie in the mid 1500s, the most significant pre-19th century event was its confiscation by the state during the French Revolution, when the unlucky losers were the Saint-Simon family. Later returned to private ownership, Giscours went to a string of owners, including Count de Pescatore who built the imposing château that still graces the property. He also hired Pierre Skawinski whose much reputed agricultural flair helped secure success for Giscours in the 1855 classification. The estate was almost ruined under the ravages of the late 19th/early 20th century. But Algerian winemaker Nicolas Tari in 1952 set in motion the remarkable process of rejuvenation which continues today under Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma.
