Steven Spurrier elected to Hall of Fame

Decanter's consultant editor Steven Spurrier has been inducted into the Wine Media Guild of New York's Hall of Fame.

The renowned wine writer and consultant joins Hugh Johnson OBE, Jancis Robinson MW OBE, Michael Broadbent, Alexis Lichine, James Halliday, Robert Parker and other wine luminaries in the Guild’s Hall of Fame.

This year’s inductees are Spurrier, Champagne expert and Decanter writer Tom Stevenson, California-based writer Gerald Boyd, and the late Leon Adams, one of the great American historians of wine who died in 1995.

The Wine Media Guild was established in the early 1970s. Describing itself as ‘an association of wine communicators dedicated to providing wine information and education’ it is open to wine writers regardless of where they live.

Individuals ‘who have had exceptional careers and significant achievements as wine authors, journalists or educators’ are nominated and elected each year to the Hall of Fame by committees of their peers.

Spurrier said, ‘In early 1968 I got married and moved from London to Provence. On visiting Saint Tropez one evening I had my palm read by an ancient lady palmist. She said two things: “change of profession within two years and possibility of lasting fame.”

‘By late 1970 I was in Paris at Les Caves de la Madeleine, so she was right about the first part. If, 43 years later, she is looking down from the great palm-reading room in the sky, she will see that she was right about the second part as well.’
