History:

The origins of the Pichon vines date back to the end of the 17th century when the Jacques de Pichon-Longueville married Thérèse de Rauzan. The Rauzans were

already involved in viticulture, mostly in Margaux, though it was some parcels purchased in Pauillac in 1689 that were presented to the newly-weds. The wine quickly developed a fine reputation and as befits such success the old manor house was duly replaced - three generations later, in 1851 - with the spectacular, fairytale-like château of today. Yet the Pichon family’s days were numbered - heirs were fast running out - and after passing to a cousin the estate was finally sold in 1933. It was purchased by the Bouteiller family who after several decades of success found themselves struggling to maintain standards. It was only after the intervention - and heavy investment - of Jean-Michel Cazes and AXA Millésimes during the 1990s that Pichon-Longueville found its feet again. It is today managed by Cazes' successor Christian Seely.
