Lidl, Arestel Cava Rosado Brut, Penedès, Spain

Great value at under £6 – a juicy traditional-method rosé with soft red berry fruit flavours. Drier than most rosé Prosecccos, and a perfect, straightforward aperitif style. This would be a good Christmas party option.

Asda, Extra Special, Moscato d'Asti, Piedmont, Italy

My wines

87

A celebratory drink that’s low in alcohol and price, this sparkling Moscato from Asti in Piedmont bursts with floral scents and aromas of mango, white peach and pear. Soft and juicy with smooth bubbles, this is delicious on its own or with (or over) dessert. Just beware of that 90g/L residual sugar! JB

Greystone, Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc, Waipara Valley, Canterbury, New Zealand, 2020

My wines

93

Truly interesting, well crafted, complex expression of Sauvignon Blanc, showing talented winemaking without loss of varietal expressiveness. Elegant nose of lemon zest, grapefruit zest and almonds. In the mouth, ripe citrus, apple peel and pear are lined by nutty nuances of toasted almonds and cashew. Delicious.

Leitz, Rüdesheimer Magdalenenkreuz Riesling Kabinett, Rheingau, Germany, 2021

My wines

92

Great elegance and perfect balance in this Kabinett which, at 72.8 gr/L residual sugar, remains fresh and lifted throughout. The strong mineral backbone supports the sweetness with ease. Flavours of white grapefruit, peach, melon and ripe pear are dense but never heavy, carried by a good acid drive. A delicious companion to rich, grilled seafood or semi-cured cheeses.

Mount Pleasant, Elizabeth Cellar Aged Semillon, Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia, 2017

My wines

92

From 1946-planted vines and released at five years of age, this still a baby: reticent on the nose and palate but promising great complexity and intrigue to come. There are whispers of lanolin, meadow flowers and freshly squeezed lemon juice, coursed through by piercing acidity. Give it a decade.

Susana Balbo, Signature Barrel-fermented Torrontes, Uco Valley, Paraje Altamira, Mendoza, Argentina, 2021

My wines

92

Susana Balbo is known as the 'Queen of Torrontés' and her consistently good barrel-fermented wine shows why. Made with grapes grown at 1,150m in Altamira, it is both fermented and aged in French oak for four months. Bright, fruity, citrus aromas: lime, grapefruit, peach, plus a whisper of florality and chalky mineral notes. The vibrant palate is well-structured, driven by crisp citrus with a mineral core balanced by a creaminess to the texture, with pretty notes of peach and apricot running beneath. Finishes crisp and fresh with lingering stone fruit and tropical notes.

Domaine de Marcé, Coulée Galante, Touraine-Oisly, Loire, France, 2020

My wines

91

The little-known 35ha appellation of Touraine-Oisly is a great, under-the-radar source of good-value Loire Sauvignon Blanc. Among its handful of producers, Marcé is a classy example. This wine is intense, with fresh cut grass, lemon balm and scents of kaffir lime leaves.

Mimo Moutinho, Encruzado, Dão, Portugal, 2021

My wines

91

Portugal offers such variety and value, and Aldi's Mimo Moutinho label always comes up trumps. This vintage its Dão white is 100% Encruzado – an exciting alternative if you can't afford Chablis. Bracing acidity and a firm mineral line supports a zingy bite of lemon and creamier stone fruit. Yum!

My wines

91

Clean and precise Alpine freshness defines this 100% Jacquère wine. As the name suggests, electric lemony lime notes, apple skin and pithy bitterness are the perfect counterpoint to richer dishes. Some nutty complexity and light lees stirring provide mid-palate density alongside the racy, pinpoint acidity.

Tiberio, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Abruzzo, Italy, 2020

My wines

91

This fresh and lively Trebbiano d'Abruzzo has a pure and bright apple and pear nose followed by a mouthful of succulent melon, light stone fruits and a big hit of salinity. The high acidity makes this a great wine for food, and also means it can age for a few years.

Cambalala, Specially Selected Rhône Blend, Voor Paardeberg, Paarl, South Africa, 2021

My wines

90

From the talented Trizanne Barnard, this Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne blend really punches above its weight for the price. Perfumed florals and tangy apple aromas continue on the impressively weighty palate, which has creamy nutty depth and peach skin texture with soft but balancing citrus freshness.

Leeuwin Estate, Siblings Sauvignon Blanc, Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia, 2020

My wines

90

Leeuwin’s entry-level Siblings range is always reliable and this vintage – still youthful and energetic but rounded by a few years of bottle age – is showing nice chalky texture and gentle creaminess from light oak contact. Pithy flavours of pink grapefruit, exotic Thai herbs and an appealing fresh grassy finish.

Asda, Extra Special Fiano, Terre Siciliane, Sicily, Italy, 2021

A DWWA Silver medal winner in 2022, this Fiano – made by the large Settesoli cooperative – caught my attention for its slatey, smoky and waxy aromas combined with juicy white peach, apple, lemon and floral flavours. It’s well balanced, with bright acidity and a hint of honeydew melon on the finish.

Made by Asconi Winery for Co-op, this is a cheerful entry-level Sauvignon Blanc for you to start exploring Moldovan wines. Jasmine, sweet peach and lychee reveal more tropical fruits and grapey perfume. Green apple and lemongrass on a fresh palate, pretty and delightful at just £6.25.

An organic Chardonnay from Chile's cool Casablanca Valley. Fruity aromas – lemon and pineapple – with a buttery edge. Malolactic fermentation adds texture to the full and fruity palate: juicy tropical and citrus fruit is balanced by vibrant acidity, with a long finish. Good value.

Pineau d’Aunis and Pinot Noir sing together beautifully in this floral and pretty rosé Vin de France. Crunchy pears, red apple skin and wild berries on a full and textural yet vibrant palate, the acidity soaring to a puckering, pippy finish. A moreish, delectable sip. Organic and low sulphur.

A new listing for Booths that will appeal to those who love bone-dry, Provençal style rosés. Bonny Doon, Le Cigare Volant, California, USA, 2020

My wines

93

This Californian blend of red Rhône varieties includes almost a third Cinsault for the first time, co-fermented with the 24% Syrah. They're a perfect match for each other – the Cinsault fresh and fruity, and the Syrah more powerful, tannic and spicy. This is deeply flavoured, with plump dark cherry berry fruit, spice and tobacco hints. Generous and open, but with elegance – one of the most exciting reds on the Tesco shelves. The white is also delicious.

My wines

93

A perfect gift for the golfer in your life, but also a cracking red fit for a festive rib of beef. Gorgeously silky, with perky blackcurrant, lifted tobacco, smoky oak char and dried herbs. Grainy tannins, bright acidity and a long finish, this will mature well over the next decade.

Pago de Sangara, Roble, Ribera del Duero, Spain, 2020

My wines

93

Power and price: it's a generalisation, but that's what first comes to mind when you think of Ribera del Duero's reds. So this lightly oaked roble is a real bargain. Made by Tinto Figuero, it has an enticing violet and sweet strawberry perfume that runs throughout the intense but medium-bodied palate, powdery talc-like tannins, crisp acidity and a lingering spiced red cherry finish. Super!

Doña Paula, El Alto Malbec, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina, 2021

My wines

92

Beautiful expression of high-altitude Malbec, with character and vibrancy, hailing from Finca El Alto de Ugarteche in southern Luján de Cuyo, at 1,050 metres above sea level. Deep red fruit flavours (strawberry, cranberry, strawberry) rest on poised tannins with a mineral quality to them. Very good length, with a refreshing assertive grip.

Errazuriz, Estate Reserva Pinot Noir, Aconcagua Valley, Chile, 2021

My wines

92

Tesco's Chilean range is really strong at the moment, exemplified by this cracking-value Pinot for under a tenner. Errazuriz is one of Chile's leading names, based in the cool-climate Aconcagua region. This entry-level Pinot is bursting with fleshy strawberry fruit flavours, and a hint of demerara sugar. It has a captivating New World exuberance to it, but manages to retain freshness at the same time. Half of the wine was aged for six months in French oak, after fermentation in stainless steel tanks.

Lidl, Corte Alle Mura Chianti Riserva, Tuscany, Italy, 2019

This is incredible value for money, displaying great typicity and authenticity, fresh and fragrant. You'll find the bright dark cherry perfume and savoury toastiness that you'd expect in a Chianti Riserva, with some earthy notes and forest fruit ripeness. Drinking really beautifully, the perfect mid-week Italian red.

Vasse Felix, Filius Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia, 2019

My wines

92

Few wines at this price give you a true taste of the grand vin, but this entry-level Cab (with Malbec and Petit Verdot) and its sister Chardonnay do. Bottle age has accentuated savoury spiced leather tones, but there's herbal, claret-like freshness in red and black currants and firm tarry tannins.

Château Dasvin Bel Air, Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux, France, 2019

A serious yet affordable Haut-Medoc that has been aged for 12 months in oak. Smokey on the nose with vanilla spices, blackcurrant, dark cherry and cedar. A vinous, juicy palate of cassis and dark plums but does not lack elegance. Structured with a hint of game towards the long finish of dark fruits.

What says Christmas better than Amarone? This is a good-value buy offering dusty, earthy currants and red fruit aromas, with savoury, meaty and very spicy flavours. It’s big and bold – as you’d expect – but a wave of refreshing acidity and menthol brings it to life.

This modern, fruit-driven style of Rioja is new to the Sainsbury's range for autumn 2022. Spicy red berries on the nose and palate, which is medium-bodied with enough tannic grip for food pairing. Try it with a whole range of dishes from bangers and mash to veggie pasta or teriyaki noodles.

Chassaux et Fils, Specially Selected Château de Suduiraut, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France, 2016

My wines

A half bottle of Suduiraut will set you back at least twice this price, if not three or four, so this Aldi gem is a great buy – especially as a little goes a long way. Complex and ageworthy, it has lusciously creamy dried apricot and rich marmalade flavours, zesty acidity and a lengthy honeyed finish. Snap it up, and the 2018 coming on line soon.

Tesco, Finest Late-Bottled Vintage, Port, Douro Valley, Portugal, 2016

My wines

Late bottled vintage (LBV) is a great-value alternative to full vintage Port, and perfect to match hard cheese or a chocolate dessert. Made by the famous British Port house Symington Family Estates, this has been aged for six years following the vintage in the Symington cellars, and is now drinking beautifully. Bags of sweet blackberry and currant fruit, rich and structured yet fresh. Long and lingering spicy finish. A lovely Christmas treat that won't bust your budget.
